Maria Yuryevna Sharapova is a Russian professional tennis player. She was born in 1987 in Ngayan, Siberia. At the age of three, Sharapova moved with her family to Sochi. She began playing tennis at the age of four using a racket given to her by Yevgeng Kafelnikov's father. At the age five or six, at a tennis clinic in Moscow, Sharapova was spotted by Martina Navratilova, who urged her parents to get her serious coaching in the USA.

At the age of seven, she and her father boarded a plane to the USA with only $700. Her father took her to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy where one of the coaches check her out. The story goes that maria knocked his hat off with the tennis ball, thereby making a favorable impression. This led her obtaining a scholarship. At the age of nine, she was signed up by a number of sponsors including Prince (racquets), Oakley and Nike.

In 2004, Sharapova became the second youngest Wimbledon women's champion in open era (after Martina Hingis) by defeating defending two-time champion Serena Williams in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). In the process she also became the first Russian ever to win that tournament.

Mohammad Hatta

Every year has its great men and women who are remembered for what they have done for their country. One of Indonesia’s great men is Dr. Mohammad Hatta. He was a man with a deep love for his country and people.

Dr. Mohammad Hatta was born in Bukittinggi on August 12th, 1902. While still in junior high school in Bukittinggi, he became interested in politics and joined the League of Young Sumatrans. He left Bukittinggi to study in Batavia. Then he went to the Netherlands. He studied economics and gained a doctorate degree there. During his stay there he was active in the national Movement. Because of his activities, he was arrested.

In 1923 Hatta returned to Indonesia. He joined a political organization called “Pendidikan Nasional Indonesia”. One of its goals was to develop political awareness among the Indonesian people. His activities again led to his arrest. The colonial government exiled him to Boven Digul, and later to Banda Naira. Shortly before the Japanese invasion. He was brought back to Java.

When the Japanese surrendered in August 1945, Soekarno and hatta proclaimed Indonesia’s Independence. Hatta became the first vice-president of the Republic of Indonesia. In 1956 Hatta resigned as vice-president and devoted himself to writing. On march 14, 1981, dr. mohammad Hatta passed away in Jakarta. Nowadays, he is no longer living among us. However, his spirit of loving the country and nation is one of the reason why he is well remembered.

Ki Hajar Dewantara

Ki Hajar Dewantara is well-known as the father of Indonesian Education. His real name is Raden Mas Suwardi Suryaningrat. When he was 40 years old, he changed his name into Ki Hajar Dewantara. He was born in Yogyakarta, on May 2, 1889. Then, his birth date is commemorated as National Education Day. He was the grandchild of Sultan Pakualam III. Because he was born as a blue-blooded child, he could go school.

Ki hajar dewantara went to ELS school which was the primary school of Netherlands. Then, he continued his study to STOVIA, a medical school for the native of Indonesia. But, during his study at STOVIA, he was sick so that he couldn’t finish it. Ki Hajar Dewantara had ever worked as a journalist in many popular printed media at that time, such as Mideen Java, Sedyotomo, De Ekpress, Kaoem Moeda, Poesara, Oetoesan Hindia, dan Tjahaja Timoer. His writings in those various media were very communicative and critical. Therefore, those could burn the spirit of the society.

After colonial period and Indonesia reached its Independence, he was trusted to be the minister of culture and education. Then, he got an appreciation of the honourable Doctor from Gadjah Mada University. Besides, he was also awarded a title as the father of national education and national hero by President Soekarno over his effort in struggling education for Indonesia. He died on April 26, 1959 in Yogyakarta.
